IMP Symposium Overview PDF Print E-mail
This is the platform where representatives from the Malaysian government, universities, NGOs as well as the corporate sector can get together and discuss issues relating to the development of Belum-Temengor Rainforest Complex on a yearly basis.

The main topic of the Symposium will change annually in accordance with the current issues at hand. As a result, research papers will be executed by the universities and published by the Pulau Banding Foundation (PBF) for dissemination to the public, learning institutions and other interested parties.

DECLARATION

We, the participants of the Pulau Banding Foundation’s Workshop on Management Plans for the Belum-Temengor Rainforest held on 17 and 18 November 2008 in Pulau Banding, Gerik, Perak Darul Ridzuan have noted the importance of the Belum-Temengor Rainforest area and in particular the Royal Belum State Park for ecotourism and its environmental functions.

We, the participants, noted that if the said area is sustainably managed, it would in the long term bring about greater continuing socio-economic benefits to the State of Perak and the various communities in the district of Hulu Perak, in particular the Orang Asli; whilst conserving for future generations the unique biodiversity of this area. This itself is the compelling reason for the existence of the Integrated Management Plan.

We, the participants, also noted the existence of the Pulau Banding Charter, formulated by a group of interested parties which has been handed to the State Government of Perak for their consideration and if appropriate for implementation.

Having noted the contents of the Discussion Papers which were presented in this preparatory workshop and noting the spirit of camaraderie and commitment during the passionate discussions during the Round Table interaction that proceeded thereafter:

We, the participants of the preparatory Workshop on the Management Plans for Belum-Temengor Rainforest area hereby make the following observations and conclusions:-

• Agree and concur with the objective of the Workshop to urge the State Government of Perak to prepare a Master Plan or Management Plan for Royal Belum State Park and subsequently the Integrated Management Plan for the Belum-Temengor Rainforest area.
• Take note of the proposed Management Plan for The Royal Belum State Park as presented by WWF Malaysia as an interested party.
• Take note of the proposed Integrated Management Plan for the Belum-Temengor Rainforest area as presented by Malaysian Nature Society as another interested party.
• Take note of the framework for the Integrated Management Plan as presented by Forest Research Institute Malaysia, based on its experience in preparing the same for South-East Pahang Peat Swamp Forest. • Take note of the Management Plan for Tasik Temengor as presented by Tenaga Nasional Berhad, the custodian of the water bodies in the area.
• Take note of the existence of the Forestry Management Plan to manage Temengor Forest Reserve and the Belum Forest Reserve as production forests by the Forestry Department Peninsular Malaysia and the Forestry Department Perak State, the custodian of the said forest reserves.
• Take note of the existence of proposals on the management of other resources in the Belum Temengor Rainforest area, especially in relation to the Orang Asli community and the biodiversity of the vast area.

THEREFORE, WE THE PARTICIPANTS, NOW HEREBY AGREE TO FORM AN AD HOC COMMITTEE TO PREPARE A SUMMARY OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE WORKSHOP TO BE HANDED OVER TO THE GOVERNMENT OF THE STATE OF PERAK FOR THEIR CONSIDERATION FOR FURTHER ACTIONS. MEMBERS OF THE COMMITTEE CHOSEN UNANIMOUSLY ARE AS FOLLOWS :-
